I was watching an episode of Law And Order: SVU the other night, about a particularly gruesome gangrape/murder, and i mused to myself, is exposure to violence hardening society to the point where it is percieved as a 'normal' occurence.
Myself, i think so. Violence is reported on the news with a complete lack of emotion. In some cases it is even glorified (The Soprano's).
More disturbing trends seem to be coming out of the woodwork recently. The rise in women committing far more violent crimes than in the past, and a sharper rise in violent youth offending speak for this absorption of violence into society.
Also, mentally ill people who commit violent crimes aren't accommodated by the mental health system. Take the case of the Swedish Foreign Minister that was gunned down outside a department store, the killer had gone for psychiatric help, only to be rejected.
I'm not condoning excessive censorship, but some things need to be restricted to protect the people using them, and society as a whole. Take guns for example, a bank account where you can get a gun as a 'reward' for signing up is hardly encouraging responsible gun use.
I've opened a few cans of worms, so I'll end it there
Yours Sincerely
